Horticulture-Related Summer Camps
Mississippi State University, Starkville, MS
This residential academic camp is a very active intergenerational immersion camp. Campers start early every morning and collect into the night. Camp is held on campus in the Clay Lyle Entomology Complex. Campers collect on the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge and at other locations. The Mississippi State Department of Health is a camp partner. As an intergenerational camp it is open to people from 10 years of age and up. Parents, teachers, nature center personnel, and even entomologists from other universities have participated in camp. Teachers receive CEUs.
Activities and topics vary and may include: collecting, identifying and pinning insects; day and night collecting; using a scanning electron microscope; tours of a bee hive and the Extension Arthropod Zoo, a taste of honey, and honey judging; forensic entomology and lab; forest entomology; insect plant interactions including a guided hike, carnivorous plants, insect and plant diseases, and medicinal and edible wild plants; medical entomology and insect vector-borne diseases such as Zeka and West Nile Virus are discussed; insect parasites; veterinary entomology; aquatic insects and water quality monitoring; plant ecology; Integrated Pest Management; Entomophagy (edible insects); Science Fair and STEM discussions; 4-H Entomology and more. There is always something new!
For returning campers there is an Entomological Research Option. This requires early registration with an added cost because this component will last approximately 4 additional days. Campers, with our assistance, will begin a literature review (provided), months before camp, and develop hypothesis that will guide their research during camp. They will skip some camp activities while conducting their experiments. After the standard camp they will remain on campus, complete their research, design a poster and practice presenting their results. It is anticipated their research will be suitable for presentation or publication, beyond science fairs.
In the fall, young entomologists are invited to join departmental faculty and staff for BugFest at the MSU Extension’s Crosby Arboretum in Picayune, Mississippi to teach what they have learned. The camp experience is reinforced with an emailed entomology newsletter, The Gloworm.
